Lisa Jennings speaks about her work and current exhibition at L Ross Gallery.
The work of modernist painter Cathy Lancaster is influenced by colorful characters from her life in Mississippi, New Orleans, and most recently midtown Memphis.
The rich oil paintings by California artist Mary Souza are the most recent additions to the gallery.
I alternate between building and excavating, inscribing lines and then filing them in, until the work has acquired a patina of time, depth, and presence. -Mary Souza
Maggie Siner’s figure painting and portraits are perhaps her most important contribution to contemporary painting.
Memphis artist Pam Wagner hopes to encourage the arrival of spring with her most recent series La Primavera. Collaged with acrylics, gold leaf and resin, each painting is 18×18.
In this weeks Memphis Flyer, noted art critic Carol Knowles had some great things to say about Jeri Ledbetter’s current exhibit:
Ledbetter is master of the palimpsest as well as the expressive line. We see traces of former worlds covered over with broad, thick swaths of pale-gray paint the artist lays down with gusto. Ledbetter dismisses her inner critics, banishes the fierce demons guarding the temple door, and gives herself permission to experiment, to fail, to start anew, to create works of art that, like life, are complex, uncertain, and achingly beautiful.
Thank you to Carol Knowles for taking the time to come see “Mano a Mano”. You can read the full review here.
Bill Ellis from the Commercial Appeal had some good things to say about the show also:
Though Ledbetter’s visual language looks to the abstract expressionists of yesteryear, notably Franz Kline, Antoni Tàpies and Cy Twombly, she has found her own voice in the midst of such masters. The careful harmony of line, shape and space that is shodo, or Japanese calligraphy, also informs her art.
Made with oil, oil bar and graphite, her pieces are for the most part presented in neutral tones, a muted layering of grays, blacks, and whites that serve to highlight Ledbetter’s compelling interaction of form and line. When color does appear, as in the brilliant burst of red in “La Palma,” it is almost shocking in contrast.

L Ross Gallery is pleased to announce representation of surreal artist, Annabelle Meecham. Meecham is a part of the Mississippi Invitational at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson through November 29, curated by Peter Plagens, New York City.
Everything I saw said “no” until four faux-naif tree paintings were displayed. If one studio provided the suprise I’d hope to find, this was it. – Peter Plagens
